Wiring A New Light From An Existing Plug

Wiring a new light from an existing plug is a relatively simple process that can make a big difference in any space. Whether you're looking to increase the ambiance of a living room or brighten up a workspace, wiring a new light from an existing plug can be done with some basic electrical knowledge and the right tools.

The first step to wiring a new light from an existing plug is to identify the existing plug and its wiring. If the existing plug is an older type, it may not be compatible with LED bulbs, so make sure to choose a bulb that is compatible with the existing plug. Next, shut off the power to the circuit at the breaker box and verify it is off by testing the circuit with a voltage tester. Once the circuit is verified to be off, remove the cover plate from the wall and disconnect the existing plug.

Make sure to leave enough slack in the wires to connect the new light fixture. Connect the black wire to the black, brass, or copper-colored screw; the white wire to the silver, nickel, or aluminum screw; and the ground wire to the green screw. Once the wire connections are tightened, carefully check for any bare wires or loose connections. Secure the new light fixture, replace the cover plate, and turn the circuit back on. With these simple steps, you can easily wire a new light from an existing plug.
